Meet Our Bride: Jessica

Some people think that since we're located in the quaint coastal town of Portsmouth, NH that we couldn't possibly have a great selection or offer a high end experience. Fortunately, once they give us a chance, they realize what a misperception that is! Jessica did:

“I am originally from a big city and was a bit skeptical that a bridal shop in a smaller town could really deliver the selection and service that I expected. But I was very pleasantly surprised. I absolutely loved my consultant and found exactly what I was looking for regarding my dress. I never felt rushed or pushed towards spending more than I wanted. I also got my bridesmaid dresses here, and they are loved by all as well. They were right on the mark as far as measurements, delivery estimates, and fittings. Everyone was so friendly and pleasant. This was the easiest part of my wedding planning by far. My dress got rave reviews at the wedding, and my husband LOVED it! I could not be happier!”

Was there something about our shop that surprised you? Did we exceed your expectations in some way? Let us know by emailing us today!

The Dreaded Bridesmaid Dress: You Really CAN Wear It Again!

We have all rolled our eyes at the bridal shop cliche, "You can wear it again!" But thanks to some of our very talented bridesmaid dress designers, that actually can be true!
How you choose to accessorize completely transforms what you are wearing. Here are some examples:
This is a gorgeous Amsale silk chiffon bridesmaid dress. It is elegant and formal because of the length, yet the flowy material makes it perfect for a less formal wedding as well.

Here is the same dress hemmed (and in a different color, obviously). Once we added some boots, a jean jacket and chunky necklace, it is perfect for an afternoon shopping or going to lunch!

This Jenny Yoo design is another great dress that does not have the stereotypical bridesmaid's appearance. It is made out of a hammered satin and has an intersting and unique texture.

Once we added a black blazer, black pumps and a pearl necklace, it easily transforms into a dress that you could wear to a business meeting or out to dinner.
Here is a super cute lace mini from Lazaro's new "Noir" collection. This would be adorable for an evening wedding. It has a deep plunging back which adds a little bit of sexiness to it, especially once combined with the short skirt. It can also be ordered in Ivory and be worn for either a rehearsal dinner or reception dress.

Here's the same dress after we removed the belt and added a few accessories including this amazing vintage clutch. This would be perfect for a Holiday or New Year's Eve party!

These are just a few examples, but there are SO many things you can use from your own closet to creatively repurpose your bridesmaid dresses!
Send us a photo of you in your re-purposed bridesmaid dress and you might just see yourself here on our blog! In the meantime, why not leave us a comment telling us what you think of these "wear it again" bridesmaid looks.

Meet Our Bride: Sara

I've mentioned before that some of our brides like to take advantage of the fact that we are a "full service" bridal salon. They don't stop with the wedding gown- they shop for accessories and bridesmaid dresses here and they even use our seamstresses to make sure the dress has the perfect fit. Sara is another such bride:

Here's Sara's story: “When I hear about an engagement I always ask if the bride to be has gone to Madeleine's Daughter! I was impressed by the selection of dresses and the knowledgeable staff. My consultant really listened to what I envisioned on my wedding day and brought me a sample of dresses that reflected that. I was able to find the perfect dress that first day and there was no need to go anywhere else. Later, I was able to find everything else I needed at Madeleine's Daughter: veil, jewelry, shoes, even undergarments! I also appreciated the level of detail and care that my seamstress put into dress. When she was finished the dress fit like a glove and even had my initials embroidered in blue underneath. The whole experience at Madeleine's Daughter made me feel so special. Thank you!”

Have you taken a minute to send us your photo and story yet? What are you waiting for? Email us today and you just might end up as one of our featured brides here on the blog!

Meet the Staff: Kaci

As promised, here is yet another fabulous Madeleine's Daughter consultant: Kaci! Please take a few minutes to get to know her:

How long have you been a consultant at Madeleine's Daughter? I've been a mother's/bridesmaid consultant at Madeleine's daughter for a few months. I have worked as a consultant elsewhere but found Madeleine's Daughter to care most about the clients that shop here.

Who is your favorite designer/dress? My favorite designer would have to be Monique Lhullier- her gowns are exquisite!

How would you describe your approach in helping a bride find her dress? My approach in helping a mom or bridesmaid find the perfect dress is first to get to know them a little bit. The best way to find a person's style is to know their personality.

What is your most memorable experience at Madeleine's Daughter? There are too many to name just one. Daily it's getting to meet awesome new clients. Working with great people is always a memorable experience.

In one word, descirbe what it's like to have an appointment with you. Honest

What is your favorite type of bridal accessory? My favorite type of bridal accessory would be a veil. Your wedding is the only day in your whole life that you'll be able to wear this accessory- and it truly completes the look.

What advice do you have for a bride coming to Madeleine's Daughter to find her dress? Try on styles that you might not pick out for yourself, even styles that you don't like on the hanger. You'll never know unless you try!

What is your favorite thing about working in the bridal industry? My favorite thing about working in the bridal industry is being a small part of the most important day in a bride's life.

Coffee or tea? Both! I drink coffee in the morning and tea at night.
White, milk or dark chocolate? Dark chocolate.
Cats or dogs? Dogs.

I hope you've enjoyed meeting Kaci. She has only been here for a few months, but already she's a great part of our team. If you have any other questions for her, or if you'd like to share about your experience working with her, please email us or leave a comment below! Meet Our Bride: Kim

Are you a bride who felt a little sad when everything was all done? We hear that often- that the experience of planning and having a wedding may be stressful, but in the end it's something every bride would love to do all over again. We like to think the same can be said of shopping for a bridal gown. Kim felt that way:

Here's her story: “My experience at Madeleine's Daughter is one that I continue to rave about even months after our wedding. The consultants are very knowledgeable on everything from styles, shapes, fabrics, accessories, and even fun ways to wear your accessories which is very helpful in selecting the perfect dress. Working with them was amazing! My consultant was able to take the visions that I had and interpret them into the most beautiful dress. It was everything that I was looking for and once I put it on I knew it was the one! From the minute you walk in the door you feel important and beautiful. I am so glad that I went to Madeleine's Daughter... I wish I could do it all over again!”

Maybe if you renew your vows, you can do it all over again with us? We'd love to have you back!

Were your feelings about shopping for your gown similar to Kim? Leave a comment below or email us today to tell us what it was like for you.

Meet the Staff: Meghan

Not all of our consultants have been here for years and years, but even the newer ones are amazing to work with. This week's staff member for you to meet is Meghan and I'm sure you're going to love her:

How long have you been a bridal consultant at Madeleine's Daughter? I started early this summer.

Who is your favorite designer/dress? Depends on the style of the wedding... I have different favorites for different venues or themes.

How would you describe your approach in helping a bride find her dress? I get to know them and what they are looking for. I try to get them to think outside the box.

What is your most memorable experience at Madeleine's Daughter? A bride came in with a particular dress in mind, but another consultant had it in with her appointment. Towards the end of the appointment, I was finally able to show her THE DRESS. As soon as I put the dress on her and she stepped up onto the pedestal, she turned bright red, put her hands to her face and began crying. She exlaimed, "This is it! It's totally it!" It made my day! I was so happy that I could make her dreams a reality!

In one word, describe what it's like to have an appointment with you. Entertaining

What is your favorite type of bridal accessory? Fabulous earrings and a headpiece

What advice do yo uhave for a bride coming to Madeleine's Daughter to find her dress? Be prepared, bring in pictures of styles you love!

What is your favorite thing about working in the bridal industry? Hearing about every brides' ideas and plans for her big day.

Coffee or tea? Coffee
White, milk or dark chocolate? Milk chocolate!
Cats and dogs? Fish... or dogs.

Even though she hasn't been here for very long, Meghan is fitting in perfectly with the Madeleine's Daughter family. We're sure you'll enjoy her as much as we do, but if you have any more questions for her, please leave a comment! And once again, be sure to check back soon to meet more of our amazing staff!

Meet Our Bride: Katelyn

I usually write some kind of introduction to the bride I'm about to feature, but in this case, Katelyn couldn't have said it any better, so I'll just use her words:

"Madeleine’s Daughter was the perfect bridal shop for me- charming and intimate, but with an extensive selection of gowns, and the most attentive and sincere consultant to assist me in making the most important dress decision in my life. She was patient and really listened to me. All the dresses she selected were right on target. I fell in love with the first dress I tried on – it felt, and looked, absolutely perfect on me.
My consultant was there during every step of the way and made everything so easy. I live in New York, so my schedule is limited, but Madeleine’s Daughter always accommodated me, even on short notice. My gown was a bit complicated to alter requiring the final fitting to be only three days before my wedding, which made me really nervous. When I slipped the gown over my head, I cried. I shouldn’t have worried; Madeleine’s Daughter delivered everything they had promised!
We purchased all my bridesmaids’ gowns and the flower girl’s dress there, too. The prices were well below other shops and everything came in right on time.
My wedding day turned out to be everything I had hoped for and more.   And, it began with “Will you marry me?” and an appointment at Madeleine’s Daughter."

See what I mean? Katelyn, you brought tears to our eyes reading this and we are so happy to have been a part of your special day.

What is Gown Preservation and Why Should I Do It?

We get a lot of brides who call and ask us about gown preservation. Most people (brides or otherwise) have no idea what gown preservation entails or even why they should do it! So here are some of the most frequently asked questions about bridal gown preservation:

1.) Why should I preserve my wedding gown? Your wedding gown is not only an expensive part of your wedding day that should be cared for, it's also a very personal statement about yourself. Every bride is unique and her dress plays a major part in showing her personality and taste. Whether you plan to pass it on to your daughter or granddaughter, preservation will help maintain the original look and quality of your dress.

2.) When should I preserve my wedding gown? We recommend you bring your dress in no more than three weeks after the wedding. If you act quickly, it's more likely that the stains left from champagne, food, dirt, make-up and perspiration will come out. If you wait longer, the stains may not be able to be removed. And don't think that just because you can't see it, it's not there. Sugars even from clear liquors and white wine will carmelize and eventually turn brown. Dirt and make-up will actually break down the fibers of the fabric. Food that isn't cleaned off can attract insects and perspiration that isn't cleaned can oxidize and turn yellow over time. In other words: the sooner, the better!

3.) Should I have my dress cleaned before I send it out for preservation? No- the preservation company we use will clean your dress prior to preserving it, so there is not need to spend extra money having it cleaned first.

4.) Isn't is a lot more expensive to preserve my gown? Why not just have it cleaned? You can certainly choose to only clean your gown and not preserve it. The savings will be around $75-100. Most dry cleaners will charge about $175-200 to clean a wedding gown. Our preservation packages start at $265. If you choose to preserve your gown, it will not only be carefully cleaned, it will be packaged in acid-free materials and treated against yellowing. In fact, the preservation company we work with has a guarantee against carmelized sugar stains and yellowing.

5.) How do I being the process of having my gown preserved? Simply bring your dress into our shop at your convenience. No appointment is necessary. We'll take your payment and handle the rest. One of the best things about our preservation company is that they ship the gown directly to you once it's finished! It's super easy

If you have any other questions about having your bridal gown preserved, just call or email us and we'll be happy to help you out!
